Easter is the Time to Question Everything

Like most churches, we plan for Holy Week the same way every year starting with Palm Sunday, then Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and finally the great day of celebration – Easter Sunday.

Even as we remember the crucifixion of Jesus, we have already made our plans to celebrate the resurrection. This, however, is not the way these events actually took place. On Friday, there was no hope for new life on Sunday. The followers of Jesus most probably assumed Friday was the end of the story (even though Jesus had told some of them otherwise). Jesus’ disciples were certain that Jesus was dead and gone. The end had come.

One of the surprises of our faith is that even when we see no future, God has a good future planned for us. Even when we are certain that all is lost, God is still working to bless our lives.

One of the key questions of faith is – do we believe more strongly in our own certainty or in God’s promises? We are certain of who the good guys are in the world and who the bad guys are. We are certain that war and poverty and disaster will continue throughout the world. We are certain that we will never find the answers we need to end these problems. But God is free to do whatever God chooses to do.

The Son of God was dead on Friday, but alive again on Sunday. Are there things you are certain about that maybe, just maybe, God can change or heal or redeem? Don’t be so certain that all hope is lost. Let your faith be bold enough to believe in God’s good future.
